A day after CM Vijay met Chandrababu Naidu, reports say Andhra Pradesh has agreed to release Krishna water to Chennai over the next two months. Vijay told Naidu the city’s reservoirs held only about 35% of capacity.
CM C. Joseph Vijay’s visit to Vijayawada has brought results for Chennai. A day after his talks with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Andhra Pradesh has agreed to release Krishna river water to Chennai over the next two months, IANS reported on Wednesday, October 14, 2026 (DT Next, News Today).
According to the IANS report, Vijay made a detailed case for Chennai at the meeting in Undavalli on Tuesday:
Water Resources Minister N. Anand and Minister Aadhav Arjuna took part in the visit (IANS, Oneindia Tamil).
The quantity has not yet been announced officially. Oneindia Tamil reported that about 3 TMC is expected to be supplied within two and a half months, and that a formal announcement is awaited. After Tuesday’s meeting, Andhra Pradesh’s official release had said the state would consider additional releases depending on availability, and that it had already released 4.08 TMC (PTI).
Speaking at the Vijayawada Utsav on Tuesday night, Naidu said that even though Andhra Pradesh is facing a water shortage, Tamil Nadu would be given its due share (Oneindia Tamil).
Krishna water from the Kandaleru reservoir reaches Chennai’s Poondi reservoir through the Telugu Ganga canal and is shared with the Cholavaram, Red Hills and Chembarambakkam lakes. With storage at about a third of capacity, a steady release over the next two months — before the city’s summer demand peaks — would ease pressure on Chennai Metrowater’s supply to millions of households.
The outcome shows the value of Vijay taking the request directly to Naidu on his first visit to Vijayawada as Chief Minister. The next step to watch is the formal release order and the flow reaching the Tamil Nadu border at Uthukottai.
