Anthony Sami, John Rose Peter and Kumar were shot dead by Karnataka Forest Department personnel on 15 August. CM Vijay called it a massacre; the Assembly has moved a call-attention motion seeking a high-level probe.
The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on Friday completed its 17th sitting day of the First Session with demands-for-grants debates covering Housing and Urban Development, Cooperative Societies and other departments. CM Vijay also congratulated chess grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa on his historic Grand Chess Tour victory and filed responses in pending election petition cases at the Madras High Court.
During the demands-for-grants debate for the Housing and Urban Development department, several announcements were made including:
| Scheme | Detail |
|---|---|
| Perambur apartments | 462 new apartments at ₹111.08 crore — a third major Perambur announcement this month (after the CMCHIS hospital on Aug 19) |
| Individual houses | 15,000 houses for economically weaker families |
| Renovation | 41,664 old housing units to be renovated |
| Complex infrastructure | ₹355 crore for infrastructure improvements in apartment complexes |
| Self-certification expansion | Building approval limit raised from 3,500 sq ft to 5,000 sq ft |
| Koyambedu roads | ₹20 crore for road improvements at Sathangadu and Koyambedu |
| Digital platform | New platform for development-rights transactions |
The Perambur announcement is the third time the constituency — Vijay's own — has featured in a major government announcement this month, after the CMCHIS ₹300-crore hospital (Aug 19) and his visit to the area during Independence Day preparations.
CM Vijay congratulated R. Praggnanandhaa after the 21-year-old Chennai grandmaster became the first Indian to win the Grand Chess Tour title, defeating American GM Fabiano Caruana 15-13 in the final at the Saint Louis Chess Club on August 28. Praggnanandhaa had entered the final day trailing by six points in the classical segment but staged a dramatic comeback — winning the rapid segment 8-0 and holding Caruana to a 4-4 draw in blitz to seal the title.
The victory — worth USD 200,000 — comes in a remarkable year for Praggnanandhaa, who had earlier become the first Indian to win the Norway Chess title, including two victories over world number one Magnus Carlsen.
CM Vijay filed his response before the Madras High Court in the election petition challenging his Tiruchy East victory, arguing that allegations such as using children in campaigning lacked sufficient material to invalidate an election victory. He also separately moved the court seeking to vacate the stay on by-elections in five constituencies — Tiruchy East, Karur, Viralimalai, Perundurai and Ambasamudram — on the grounds that constituents are being deprived of elected representation.
The official Assembly portal confirmed that the First Session of the 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly concluded on August 28, 2026. The session, which began on May 12 with the swearing-in and ran through multiple phases including the Budget Session (August 5–28), produced five unanimous resolutions, two budgets and numerous Rule 110 welfare announcements.
