Bharathiraja — born Chinnasamy on July 17, 1941, in Allinagaram, Theni district — passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at his residence in Chennai after a prolonged illness. He was 84. The veteran filmmaker had been battling age-related ailments and severe respiratory complications for several months, including a stint in the ICU at MGM Hospital six months prior.

"Mr. Bharathiraja created several successful films infused with the vibrant essence of rural life, leaving an indelible mark unique to him in the world of Tamil cinema." — CM C. Joseph Vijay

Who Was Bharathiraja?

Known as Iyakkunar Imayam (The Himalaya of Directors), Bharathiraja was one of Tamil cinema's most transformative filmmakers. He redefined mainstream Tamil cinema by taking it out of studio sets and into the real villages and fields of Tamil Nadu. His films introduced naturalistic performances, earthy dialogue and stories that spoke directly to the rural soul of Tamil people.

He made his directorial debut in 1977 with 16 Vayathinile, featuring Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth and Sridevi. The film was a landmark — raw, rural and emotionally honest. It immediately won Bharathiraja the Tamil Nadu State Award for Best Direction for his very first film.

Career & Filmography

Over a career spanning nearly five decades, Bharathiraja directed more than 40 films in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. His celebrated works include Kizhakke Pogum Rail, Sigappu Rojakkal, Nizhalgal, Alaigal Oivathillai, Mudhal Mariyathai, Vedham Pudhithu, Karuththamma and Kizhakku Cheemayile. His final directorial work was a segment in Amazon Prime Video's anthology Modern Love Chennai (2023). His unreleased film Pulavar was his final acting role.

Awards & Honours

Bharathiraja won six National Film Awards, four Filmfare Awards South, six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and a Nandi Award. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 2004 for his contribution to Indian cinema.

Personal Loss Before Death

Bharathiraja had also endured a personal tragedy — his son Manoj died of a cardiac arrest in March 2024 at just 48. He is survived by his family, his disciples across Tamil cinema, and countless fans who grew up watching his films.

CM Vijay's Visit & State Honours

On June 10, CM Vijay visited Bharathiraja's residence in Chennai and personally garlanded his mortal remains, offering his final respects to the legendary filmmaker. Vijay described his passing as an "irreplaceable and monumental loss to the Tamil film industry."

CM Vijay announced full State Honours for Bharathiraja's final journey. Among those who also paid respects in person were Rajinikanth, Suriya, Ilaiyaraaja, Radikaa Sarathkumar, Bhagyaraj and director Shankar.
