Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay reviewed urban waste management initiatives on Monday and directed officials to establish biogas plants across Tamil Nadu, after examining the performance of the 100-tonne-per-day biogas facility at Chetpet, Chennai. He approved the preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for similar facilities in multiple districts, aiming to strengthen solid waste management while boosting renewable energy production.

The Chetpet facility, operated under a public-private partnership between Greater Chennai Corporation and a private waste-to-energy operator, processes 100 tonnes of food and vegetable waste daily — largely sourced from hotels and the Koyambedu market — converting it into biogas through anaerobic digestion. The plant has functioned as one of the city's key waste-to-energy assets, and CM Vijay's review pointed to it as a model worth scaling across the state.
The push for expanded biogas infrastructure aligns with the government's broader solid waste management priorities, aiming to reduce landfill dependency, generate renewable energy, and create a sustainable revenue model for local bodies through biogas sales.
