Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay addressed a large public gathering at Atlas Kalaiyaranga Ground in Karur on Friday, delivering his first public speech in the district since the September 2025 stampede tragedy. Dressed in black, an emotional CM Vijay spoke directly to the people of Karur about the loss the district had suffered and the government's continued commitment to standing by the affected families.
During his speech, CM Vijay described the 41 people who died in the stampede as being like the children of their own families, saying the pain of the tragedy had not faded with time even months later. He announced that TVK would build a memorial in Karur to honour the victims, calling it a lasting tribute to everyone who lost their lives that day.
He also used the address to respond to questions around responsibility for the tragedy, stating that crowd management on the day had been the responsibility of the police, and to push back on the Supreme Court petition filed by the DMK ahead of his visit, accusing the party of trying to obstruct him from meeting the victims' families despite no longer being in power.
The speech came during CM Vijay's two-day visit to Karur, which also included handing over 32 government job appointment orders to affected families and laying the foundation stone for a ₹1,700 crore footwear manufacturing unit expected to create around 13,500 jobs in the district.
