The Koyambedu facility recycles municipal secondary-treated sewage into industrial-grade water, reducing the city's dependence on fresh water for non-drinking purposes. It has been in operation for roughly seven years, with a current treatment capacity of 45 million litres per day, expandable to 60 MLD. CM Vijay reviewed the plant's treatment quality and its supply arrangements for institutional and commercial users across the city.
Since taking office, CM Vijay has periodically made evening field inspections of government facilities and infrastructure projects, a pattern that has continued with this visit to Koyambedu. Police deployed additional barricades and tightened security around the facility and surrounding roads to manage the crowds that gathered as news of the visit spread — though officials have described the visit as a direct inspection rather than a scheduled public event.
