CM Vijay has written to PM Modi urging that veterinary science admissions not be made to depend on a new common entrance exam or NEET, and instead continue based on Class 12 marks or state-determined criteria.

CM Vijay has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to advise the Veterinary Council of India to permit admissions to the Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (BVSc & AH) programme on the basis of Higher Secondary (10+2) examination marks or criteria determined by state governments, saying it would not be appropriate to introduce NEET for veterinary courses.

What Prompted the Letter

In the letter, sent Friday, Vijay said it had been brought to his notice that a Common Entrance Examination for admission and allocation of seats through centralised counselling had been prescribed for veterinary courses, and that states without their own such examination had been asked to adopt the NEET (UG)-2026 merit list from the 2026-27 academic year onwards.

CM Vijay urged that admissions to veterinary courses continue based on Class 12 marks or an admission process determined by state governments, rather than a new centralised entrance exam.

Following the Same Line as Medical Admissions

The request echoes Tamil Nadu's long-standing position on NEET for medical admissions, where the state has repeatedly argued that a centralised entrance exam disadvantages students from rural and state-board backgrounds compared to those from CBSE and coaching-heavy backgrounds. With this letter, CM Vijay has extended that same argument to veterinary science admissions, asking the Centre to preserve the current Class 12-based or state-determined admission process rather than folding veterinary seats into the NEET framework.
