CM Vijay has called a consultative meeting of all Tamil Nadu MPs for August 8 to discuss the proposed Delimitation Bill, which he says would adversely affect the state's interests.
CM Vijay has convened a meeting of all Tamil Nadu Members of Parliament for Saturday, August 8, to discuss the Union government's proposed Delimitation Bill and its implications for the state. According to an official statement, all Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs from Tamil Nadu — across the DMK, Congress, CPI(M), CPI, VCK and MDMK — have been invited to the consultative meeting, to be held at Kalaivanar Arangam in Chennai at 3 PM.
CM Vijay has opposed the proposed delimitation exercise, arguing it would adversely affect Tamil Nadu's representation and interests. The meeting comes as the Centre signals a possible reintroduction of the Delimitation Bill, which would redraw parliamentary constituencies based on the 2011 Census and could increase the total number of Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 850 — a prospect that has raised concern in southern states about a potential reduction in their relative share of seats given slower population growth compared to the north.
Tamil Nadu Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar had earlier announced the government's plan to convene the MPs' meeting and questioned whether DMK MPs would attend. The DMK responded that it would participate only if CM Vijay first convened a separate all-party meeting on the Cauvery river-sharing and Mekedatu dam issues — a demand Vijay rejected in the Assembly the same day, saying there was no need for such a meeting on Cauvery matters. Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin has separately said the DMK has always opposed delimitation and would continue to do so, regardless of the outcome of Saturday's meeting.
