The Tamil Nadu government announced on Tuesday that Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay will personally lead the official birth centenary celebrations of legendary actor Sivaji Ganesan in 2028. The announcement was made to coincide with the veteran actor's 25th death anniversary, at a floral tribute event held at Sivaji Ganesan's memorial in Adyar, Chennai.
State Minister for Film Technology and the Cinematograph Act, Rajmohan, paid floral tributes at the memorial, where members of Sivaji Ganesan's family — including his son, actor Prabhu, and grandson, filmmaker Adhik Ravichandran — were also present. Speaking to reporters afterward, Prabhu said CM Vijay had personally conveyed his commitment to ensuring the centenary celebrations are organised in a grand manner, and that the family was pleased with the government's decision to commemorate the milestone.
Sivaji Ganesan's birth anniversary has been observed as an official Tamil Nadu government function since 2019, when then Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami announced under Rule 110 in the State Assembly that October 1 would be marked annually as a government event in his honour. Widely regarded as one of Indian cinema's greatest actors, Sivaji Ganesan — honoured with the Kalaimamani, Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, the French Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award — remains a defining figure in Tamil cinema history, and CM Vijay's decision to personally lead the 2028 centenary marks the highest-profile commemoration of the actor to date.
