CM Vijay extends Tamil Nadu Day greetings and announces that his government will officially celebrate both November 1 and July 18 to honour the state's history and identity.
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay extended Tamil Nadu Day greetings to the people of the state on Saturday, announcing that his government will officially celebrate both November 1 — the day Madras State was formed — and July 18, the day former Chief Minister C. N. Annadurai's resolution to rename the state Tamil Nadu was passed, adopted as the two commemorative days honouring the state's history and identity.
CM Vijay paid tribute to the freedom fighters and leaders whose sacrifices led to the creation and naming of the state, saying the resolution to name Tamil Nadu was passed to honour the antiquity, history, culture and linguistic pride of Tamils. He called on citizens to pledge to transform Tamil Nadu — home of the classical Sangam language, where equality and social justice thrive, and which excels in education, technology and skilled human resources — into the premier state of India.
CM Vijay urged citizens to remember and pay respects to the selfless martyrs who struggled for the creation of Tamil Nadu, while preserving and promoting Tamil culture and values for future generations. Tamil Nadu Day marks the anniversary of the 1967 Madras State Legislative Assembly resolution — passed unanimously under then Chief Minister C. N. Annadurai following a fasting protest by Sankaralinganar — that formally sought to rename the state Tamil Nadu, a change that took effect on 14 January 1969.
