⚖️ DMK Moves Supreme Court Again Ahead of CM Vijay's Karur Visit

⏱ 2 min read

A fresh DMK petition seeks to restrain CM Vijay and named ministers from public comment on the Karur case — just days after the Supreme Court declined a similar plea and made clear it will not regulate an elected Chief Minister's official duties.

Ahead of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay's scheduled visit to Karur on July 10 and 11, the DMK has approached the Supreme Court with a fresh petition seeking to restrain the Chief Minister and named ministers from making public statements on the Karur stampede case while the CBI investigation continues. The Court has allowed urgent listing of the plea.

What the New Petition Seeks

The petition names CM Vijay along with ministers in his cabinet, alleging that public statements from those now in government could influence the ongoing CBI inquiry into the September 2025 stampede. This follows a similar petition filed by the DMK that the Supreme Court had already declined to entertain on July 7, when the Bench observed that it would be difficult for a court to regulate what a democratically elected Chief Minister can say or where he can travel in the discharge of his official duties.

A near-identical plea was dismissed by the same Court just two days earlier — with the Bench cautioning against using judicial proceedings as a political platform.

Visit Preparations Continue Regardless

Despite the fresh legal challenge, preparations for CM Vijay's two-day Karur visit are proceeding as planned. TVK functionaries have already inspected the visit venue, and the Chief Minister is expected to meet the families of the stampede victims, hand over government job appointment orders, and inaugurate welfare and development projects in the district — continuing the government's stated commitment to standing by the affected families.

Independent Investigation Continues

The CBI investigation into the Karur stampede, which claimed 41 lives at a rally in September 2025, remains under the supervision of the Supreme Court and continues independent of the political and legal exchanges between the DMK and the ruling TVK government. The government has maintained that its focus remains on supporting the affected families while the investigation runs its course.
