From a missed Pongal release to a Supreme Court battle and a massive piracy leak, Jana Nayagan's seven-month road to theatres was one of the most closely watched in Tamil cinema — and it still delivered a record-breaking opening.
Jana Nayagan carried the heaviest expectations of any Tamil film in recent memory — announced as Vijay's final film before his full-time political career, and the first film to release while he served as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Between that announcement and its eventual release on July 23, 2026, the film weathered a seven-month certification battle, a Supreme Court case, and one of the biggest piracy leaks in recent Tamil cinema history.
Jana Nayagan was submitted to the CBFC on December 19, 2025, ahead of its planned January 9, 2026 Pongal release. The examining committee initially suggested a U/A certificate with cuts, but the process stalled after a complaint alleged that certain scenes could hurt religious sentiments and that the film used Armed Forces symbols without prior approval. The matter was referred to a Revising Committee, forcing KVN Productions to postpone the Pongal release just days before it was due.
The producers moved the Madras High Court, where a single-judge bench ordered the CBFC to issue a U/A certificate. The CBFC appealed, and a division bench stayed that order — sending the producers to the Supreme Court, which declined to intervene and directed the matter back to the High Court process. During the uncertainty, fellow actors publicly rallied behind Vijay: Jiiva wrote on X, "Delayed but not defeated," while Silambarasan TR added, "Setbacks have never stopped you."
In April 2026, while the film was still uncertified, brief clips — including the introduction sequence and title card — leaked online. Within a day, a full HD copy of the uncertified film was circulating on piracy websites, reportedly viewed around 1.2 crore times before access was blocked. The Madras High Court prohibited further circulation, and Tamil Nadu Police later arrested several people in connection with the leak, including a freelance film editor.
When the CBFC finally cleared the film, it came with an 'A' certificate — not the U/A originally sought — after 12 mandated changes. These included muting or modifying references to "TVK" and "New India," deleting a scene showing the national flag falling to the ground, altering a book cover and dialogue referencing B. R. Ambedkar, removing a scene depicting a child being harmed, muting religious terms, and rewording a dialogue about India. Producer Venkat K. Narayana later said he was disappointed by the 'A' certificate, noting the film's themes around girl-child empowerment had been aimed at a younger audience.
Despite everything, Jana Nayagan released worldwide on July 23, 2026, to scenes of celebration across Tamil Nadu — fireworks, milk abhishekams on cutouts, and houseful morning shows. The film delivered ₹41 crore net in India and roughly ₹78 crore worldwide gross on Day 1, registering the best morning occupancy of any Tamil film in 2026. In the days after release, Tamil actor Anandhi Ajay shared an emotional video after discovering that all of her scenes had been removed from the final cut, saying she had waited nearly a year and a half for the film, calling it especially painful given how much the project meant to her.
