Best Morning Occupancy of the Year

Jana Nayagan registered the highest morning occupancy for any Tamil film in 2026, surpassing Parasakthi to take the top spot, with Suriya's Karuppu slipping to third. Tamil Nadu led the charge with houseful morning shows across the state, and the film's overall India occupancy across all languages stood at a strong 41.6%. It now ranks as the fourth-biggest opening day of Vijay's career, behind only Leo, Beast and The Greatest of All Time (GOAT) — and ahead of Sarkar.

"Fans already celebrated his election and political victory — now they get to celebrate the film as well. Vijay is no longer just a star, he's the Chief Minister. Fans are living a moment of their lives." — Trade analyst Ramesh Bala

A Joyous Send-Off

Theatres across the state saw the traditional celebrations that have long marked a Thalapathy Vijay release — fireworks, drumming, and fans dancing in the aisles — this time carrying the added emotional weight of being his last outing as a lead actor. Vijay's performance has drawn strong praise from early audiences and critics alike, with many describing the film as a fitting, celebratory farewell to his decades-long acting career as he steps into his new role leading the state.

Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan follows a former police officer who becomes a public champion against corruption and authoritarian power. The film stars Vijay alongside Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju, Bobby Deol, Priyamani, Prakash Raj, Nassar, Nani and Gautham Vasudev Menon, with music by Anirudh Ravichander — his fifth collaboration with Vijay after Kaththi, Master, Beast and Leo.
