Announced under Rule 110, the package is intended to let members travel their constituencies and monitor projects “without depending on others” — and has drawn criticism over the cost to the exchequer.
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced official vehicles and a monthly allowance for all 234 members of the Legislative Assembly, making the announcement under Rule 110 on Wednesday.
The support measures, he said, would help members travel across their constituencies to address public grievances and monitor government projects without depending on others — a reference to the practice of legislators relying on party functionaries, contractors or local sponsors for transport.
The package covers an official vehicle for each member, along with a monthly allowance intended for constituency work. Reports have also referred to secretarial support and provision toward driver and fuel costs. Figures circulating in press reports vary, and the government has not published a consolidated per-member breakdown; the detailed order will settle the precise amounts.
The announcement has drawn objections. Critics have pointed out that many MLAs already own vehicles, and have questioned the additional burden on the exchequer at a time when the government has repeatedly cited fiscal constraints — including in the Budget of 5 August, which acknowledged that state debt had doubled over five years, and in the crop loan waiver announcement, where relief was described as being extended despite those constraints.
Opposition voices have framed the measure as spending on legislators rather than citizens. Supporters argue that constituency travel is a real cost of the job, that the alternative is informal dependence on private sponsors, and that the measure applies to every member of the House regardless of party.
The announcement came alongside two major welfare decisions the same day — the increase in health insurance cover to ₹25 lakh and a ₹3 rise in the milk procurement price.
