On the instruction of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, the Tamil Nadu government has ordered the withdrawal of 65 criminal cases registered against about 1,800 people who took part in protests against the NEET exam.
Between 10 May and 31 July 2026, protests against NEET were held in many places across Tamil Nadu. A total of 65 cases were registered at various police stations against about 1,800 participants, and they were pending at different stages.
The cases and their current status were brought to the Chief Minister’s attention. On his instruction, the government examined withdrawing them and has issued an order to take the necessary legal steps to withdraw all 65 cases immediately.
The TVK government has consistently opposed NEET. The Assembly passed a resolution seeking its abolition in August, and CM Vijay has repeatedly asked the Centre to exempt Tamil Nadu. Withdrawing the cases means students, parents and activists who joined the protests will not face prosecution.
