Work is under way on the free dhoti and saree handout for Pongal 2027. The scheme will cost ₹642.88 crore and reach about 2.23 crore rice ration cardholders and old-age pension beneficiaries, according to details released on 6 November 2026.
The scheme gives handloom weavers six months of assured work and supports the livelihoods of more than 5 lakh textile workers. In October, the government raised weaving wages for Pongal dhotis and sarees.
Distribution dates have not yet been announced.
