Tamil Nadu is considering adding chicken biryani once a week to its noon-meal scheme, with School Education Minister Rajmohan's proposal now under CM Vijay's review.
The Tamil Nadu government is considering a proposal to serve chicken biryani once a week to students under the state's noon-meal scheme. School Education Minister Rajmohan confirmed he has submitted a formal request, along with supporting data, to CM Vijay, who is currently reviewing the proposal.
Speaking to reporters, Minister Rajmohan framed the idea as the latest chapter in a long history of enhancements to Tamil Nadu's noon-meal programme, tracing its evolution across successive governments.
Alongside the proposed biryani addition, officials are also examining ways to improve the overall quality of food served under the scheme, including the grade of rice supplied to schools. Tamil Nadu's noon-meal scheme currently covers nearly 40 lakh students from Classes 1 to 10, while the CM's Breakfast Scheme covers around 32 lakh children from Classes 1 to 8 following its recent expansion. The government is also weighing proposals to extend both schemes to Classes 11 and 12, which would bring in an estimated 8 lakh additional students.
