The Tamil Nadu government has confirmed its first Budget under CM Vijay will be presented on August 5, with departments instructed to finalise Budget estimates following weeks of review meetings.
The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly will convene its Budget Session on August 5, 2026, with Finance Minister Marie Wilson presenting the first Budget of the CM Vijay-led government at 10:00 AM, Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar has confirmed. It marks the new TVK administration's maiden financial statement for the 2026-27 fiscal year, and all departments have been instructed to finalise their Budget estimates ahead of the presentation.
Finance Minister Wilson said CM Vijay had personally conducted review meetings with ministers and Chief Secretaries over 15 to 16 days, each lasting six to seven hours, to finalise Budget and policy priorities. Speaking to reporters after a Cabinet meeting marking 55 days in office, Wilson said the process had concluded successfully and that the public had welcomed the government's functioning and its anti-corruption measures.
Ahead of the Budget, Higher Education Minister K. Viswanathan outlined one flagship measure already taking shape: a target of facilitating collateral-free education loans of up to ₹7.5 lakh for 1,00,200 students during the 2026-27 academic year, with an expected disbursement of around ₹3,000 crore. Viswanathan said CM Vijay had taken "a firm decision that no student should be prevented from pursuing higher education due to a lack of financial resources."
The Budget is expected to be closely watched by investors and industry stakeholders as the clearest signal yet of the new government's fiscal priorities, coming weeks after the White Paper on Tamil Nadu's finances revealed a total debt of ₹13.18 lakh crore and a revenue deficit of ₹78,324 crore.
