On CM Vijay's directions, Tamil Nadu has petitioned the Supreme Court seeking directions to Karnataka to release Tamil Nadu's due share of Cauvery water, citing actual inflows far below the CWMA-ordered 3,500 cusecs.
The Tamil Nadu government has moved the Supreme Court seeking directions to ensure the release of Cauvery water to the state, following what it called Karnataka's failure to comply with orders from the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC). CM Vijay directed the government to approach the Court after Karnataka failed to release the mandated share despite the standing directions.
At its 139th meeting on July 28, the CWRC directed Karnataka to ensure the release of 3,500 cusecs of water at Biligundlu from July 29 to August 12, drawing from the Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) and Kabini reservoirs — a decision subsequently ratified at the CWMA's 54th emergency meeting on July 30. Tamil Nadu's petition states that between July 29 and August 2, actual inflow at Biligundlu ranged only between 158 and 550 cusecs, far below the ordered quantity.
Citing Karnataka's failure to release even a proportionate share and acting on the advice of senior legal counsel, CM Vijay directed the state to petition the Supreme Court on Monday. The petition seeks appropriate directions to resolve the dispute and ensure Tamil Nadu receives its rightful share of Cauvery water within the stipulated timeframe. Tamil Nadu has also pointed to increased rainfall in the catchment areas as further reason the release should not pose difficulty for Karnataka.
