Founded by actor-politician M. G. Ramachandran on 17 October 1972 after he was expelled from the DMK. MGR was Chief Minister from 1977 until his death in 1987; J. Jayalalithaa later led the party and served several terms as Chief Minister. The AIADMK won 47 seats in the 2026 Assembly election.
