Founded by C. N. Annadurai on 17 September 1949 after breaking away from E. V. Ramasamy (Periyar)'s Dravidar Kazhagam. The DMK came to power in Tamil Nadu in 1967, ending Congress rule in the state, and was led for five decades by M. Karunanidhi. M. K. Stalin, party president since 2018, was Chief Minister from 2021 to 2026. In the 2026 Assembly election the DMK won 59 seats and is the largest opposition party.
