Formed on 11 October 1988 by the merger of Janata Party factions, the Lok Dal and the Jan Morcha, led by V. P. Singh. It led the National Front government (1989–90) and the United Front governments (1996–98); it later split into several parties including the JD(U), JD(S) and RJD.
