The Remark

After former minister Anbil Mahesh was brought to Puzhal Central Prison on the night of October 26, DMK supporters gathered outside and blocked the police vehicle. A video that circulated on October 27 showed Saravanan saying, in Tamil, words to the effect of: “If we had finished him off at Karur that day, this would not have happened today.” The remark was widely condemned.

Reaction

Law Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar said the remark showed that something had been planned at Karur: “This means that they had planned something in Karur and now the truth has come out in the open.” TVK has long questioned how the tragedy happened. The remark itself, however, is not evidence of how the crowd crush happened — that is for the investigation to establish.

The Karur Tragedy and the CBI Probe

On September 27, 2025, a crowd crush at a TVK campaign meeting addressed by Vijay at Velusamypuram, on the outskirts of Karur, claimed 41 lives and injured many more. In October 2025 the Supreme Court handed the investigation to the CBI and set up a three-member monitoring committee headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Rastogi. The CBI investigation is continuing under the Supreme Court’s monitoring.

For the families of the 41, the pain of that evening has not faded. Any comment that turns their loss into a political taunt hurts them most of all.
