Food delivery workers in north Chennai will soon have an air-conditioned rest room where they can wait between orders. The Greater Chennai Corporation is building it on Erukkancherry High Road in Perambur, the constituency of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, and the works were taken up on his instruction.
The rest room is one of four development works worth ₹1.45 crore in Perambur that were recently launched with a pooja. The rest room is expected to open in about 20 days, in early November.
Chennai already has similar rest rooms at Anna Nagar and K.K. Nagar, opened last year. The Perambur facility takes the idea to north Chennai, where many delivery riders work.
Delivery riders spend long hours on the road in Chennai’s heat and rain, often with nowhere to sit, charge a phone or use a toilet between orders. A clean, cool place to rest makes their work safer and a little easier.
