The Tamil Nadu government on June 24, 2026 issued an official Government Order for the Thaimaaman Thanga Mothira Thittam (Tamil Maman Gold Ring Scheme) — one of the most distinctive welfare announcements of the CM Vijay government. Every child born in a government hospital to a family permanently residing in Tamil Nadu will receive a 1 gram gold ring as a symbolic gift, celebrating the birth and encouraging institutional deliveries at government hospitals.

What Is the Scheme

The scheme takes its name from the deep-rooted Tamil cultural tradition of "Thai Maman Seer" — where a maternal uncle presents blessings and gifts to welcome a newborn into the family. CM Vijay's government has institutionalised this cultural practice into a welfare scheme, with the state itself playing the role of the maternal uncle (Thaai Maman) for every child born in a government hospital.

🏺 The Cultural Tradition Behind the Name

"Thai Maman Seer" is a centuries-old Tamil tradition in which the maternal uncle gifts the newborn gold or silver jewellery as a symbol of blessing and prosperity. By naming the scheme after this tradition, CM Vijay has framed the state as the family's partner in welcoming every new life — regardless of economic background.

Why It Matters

Tamil Nadu has consistently prioritised maternal and child healthcare through programmes such as free institutional deliveries, newborn care services, emergency obstetric treatment and nutritional support. The gold ring scheme adds a symbolic and economic dimension to these efforts — giving families a tangible reason to choose government hospitals for deliveries, while also providing an asset of lasting value to the newborn.

The scheme directly fulfils a TVK pre-poll promise and is being implemented within 45 days of the government taking office — making it one of the fastest promise-to-GO conversions of the Vijay administration.
