CM Vijay inspected the widened Okkiyam Maduvu channel, the new 120-metre Karappakkam bridge and Pallikaranai–Buckingham Canal desilting, and told officials to finish all works before the northeast monsoon intensifies.
With the northeast monsoon approaching, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay inspected flood-prevention works at Okkiyam Maduvu in Karappakkam, Sholinganallur taluk, on Wednesday, October 14, 2026 — the main outlet that carries south Chennai’s floodwater to the sea (Daily Thanthi, Oneindia Tamil, Maalai Malar).
Surplus water from south Chennai’s lakes passes through the Pallikaranai marsh and reaches the sea only through Okkiyam Maduvu, the South Buckingham Canal and the Muttukadu estuary. When this route was blocked during Cyclone Michaung in December 2023, residents of Velachery, Pallikaranai, Medavakkam, Perungudi, Thoraipakkam and Sholinganallur were stuck in floodwater for days (Daily Thanthi).
Ministers N. Anand (Rural Development and Water Resources), Aadhav Arjuna (Public Works and Sports Development), P. Venkataramanan (Food and Consumer Protection), Rajmohan (School Education, Tamil Development, Information and Publicity), N. Marie Wilson (Finance) and R. Kumar (AI, IT and Digital Services), Sholinganallur MLA Saravanan, Additional Chief Secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi, Water Resources Secretary Prashant M. Vadnere and Chennai Corporation Commissioner Sameeran took part (Daily Thanthi, Oneindia Tamil).
The inspection followed the foundation-stone ceremony for the ₹3,108 crore Chennai Ring Main project at Sholinganallur the same day, and builds on the monsoon preparedness reviews the Chief Minister has held since September.
