What It Means for West Chennai

The line links the fast-growing western suburbs — Poonamallee, Kattupakkam, Iyyappanthangal and Porur — to Vadapalani, along one of the city's most crowded roads. The PMO said it will cut daily travel time and connect the western suburbs to the city centre.

The stretch was cleared by the Commissioner of Railway Safety in May and was waiting only for its inauguration (DT Next). Chief Minister Vijay inspected the Phase-2 works in July and asked for the remaining corridors to be finished quickly. Phase-2 has three corridors totalling about 118.9 km (News Today).

Part of a Bigger Day for Tamil Nadu

The Metro opening was the first item of a visit in which the Prime Minister launched or laid foundation stones for projects worth over ₹13,000 crore across Tamil Nadu — highways, railways, ports, a refinery unit and a brain-research centre at IIT Madras. See the full list of projects ›

At the IIT Madras function that followed, CM Vijay placed Tamil Nadu’s demands — including Metro Phase-3 — before the Prime Minister, and PM Modi said he would work with CM Vijay for the state’s growth.
