In short

Revenue and Disaster Management Minister K.A. Sengottaiyan said Tamil Nadu is fully ready for the northeast monsoon — boats are in place in flood-prone areas, hospital power is being checked, and Amma Canteens will feed people in need.

Revenue and Disaster Management Minister K.A. Sengottaiyan said on Thursday, October 15, 2026, that the Tamil Nadu government is fully prepared to face the northeast monsoon, which set in on October 14.

What Is in Place

The Forecast

Citing the India Meteorological Department, the Minister said heavy rain may reach the state from the first week of November, linked to El Niño conditions.

Western Districts Review

The same day, the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department held its second regional conference at the CODISSIA campus in Coimbatore for 11 western districts — Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Erode, Krishnagiri, Namakkal, Salem, Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Karur and Tiruchy. Chaired by Minister N. Anand, it was set to review monsoon preparations, rural drinking water and the “Vetri Tamilagam” vision document. The first regional meeting was held in Chennai on October 8.

Why It Matters

The 2023 floods showed what happens when preparation comes late. This year the government has moved early: the Chief Minister inspected south Chennai’s flood outlets on October 14 and north Chennai’s canals in Perambur on October 15, and ministers are reviewing district plans before the heaviest rain arrives.
