A day after inspecting south Chennai’s flood outlets, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay turned to north Chennai on Thursday, October 15, 2026, inspecting monsoon works in Perambur, his own Assembly constituency.
He went to Perambur straight from Ambattur, where he had opened the CapitaLand data centre with Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister.
He asked officials what had been done during past floods, including in 2005. Chennai has about 1,600 km of stormwater drains.
Commercial Taxes and Registration Minister Lokesh Tamilselvan, Chief Secretary Sai Kumar, Tamil Nadu Housing Board Chairman Siva, Water Resources Secretary Prashant M. Vadnere, Additional Chief Secretary (Municipal Administration) Gagandeep Singh Bedi and Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner G.S. Sameeran accompanied him. The government has also named zone-wise minister in-charges for the Chennai Corporation to speed up works and relief.
North Chennai’s low-lying areas — Vyasarpadi, Perambur, Kolathur — flood quickly when canals choke. With inspections in the south on October 14 and the north on October 15, the Chief Minister has now checked both ends of the city’s drainage system as the northeast monsoon sets in.
