Directed by H. Vinoth · Music by Anirudh Ravichander · Releasing July 24, 2026
Jana Nayagan is Vijay's final film before his full-time transition into politics — a political action drama directed by H. Vinoth, adapted from the 2023 Telugu hit Bhagavanth Kesari. Originally set for a Pongal 2026 release, the film faced a long certification battle before finally being confirmed for release on July 24, 2026.
This is Vijay's film 69 of 69 as a lead actor — counted from his debut Naalaiya Theerpu (1992) — making it his landmark farewell film, arriving after he has already assumed office as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
Originally locked for a grand Pongal release on January 9, 2026, Jana Nayagan's release was delayed after a complaint led the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to refer it to a revising committee over its political and religious content. The dispute reached the Madras High Court and briefly the Supreme Court before the certification process resumed.
The film was dealt a further blow in April 2026 when an unfinished cut was leaked online and widely pirated — Tamil Nadu Police reported that nearly 1.2 crore people watched the pirated version before any official release. The makers, KVN Productions, have since clarified that a censor certificate circulating on social media claiming official clearance is fake.
The film has since cleared every remaining censor hurdle and is officially confirmed for release on July 24, 2026. As part of the certification process, several cuts were made that altered elements of the film tied to Vijay's political identity — including flag visuals, a child-burning scene, and references to TVK — before the CBFC granted its final clearance.
Vijay's 69th film as lead actor and his final acting project — announced as "Thalapathy 69" — it will be his cinematic farewell, releasing after he has already become Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
Jana Nayagan is a remake of the 2023 Telugu blockbuster Bhagavanth Kesari; writer-director Anil Ravipudi receives a story credit on the Tamil version.
Directed by H. Vinoth with music by Anirudh Ravichander; produced by KVN Productions in their first Tamil venture, on a reported budget of ₹300–500 crore.
Pooja Hegde reunited with Vijay after Beast; Bollywood's Bobby Deol plays the antagonist, alongside Priyamani, Prakash Raj, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon and Narain.
The film was leaked online in April 2026 before release; Tamil Nadu Police reported nearly 1.2 crore people watched the pirated version, and multiple arrests followed.
The title means "People's Hero" — a fitting bridge between Vijay's cinema journey and his political one.
Jana Nayagan carries a significance no other film in Vijay's 69-film journey as lead actor can claim — it is the closing chapter of his cinema career, arriving in theatres only after he has already taken office as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Whatever its eventual commercial fate, its place in the story is already secure: the film that bridges Thalapathy the actor and C. Joseph Vijay the Chief Minister.
