The Film

Kudumbam (Family) is a 1984 Tamil family drama directed by S. A. Chandrasekhar, who also wrote the screenplay. The story is by Shoba Chandrasekhar. It was released on 22 November 1984.

Vijayakanth plays the lead, with Devisri, Jaishankar, Sujatha and Sripriya. Young Vijay, the director's son, plays Narada. It was his second appearance on screen, after Vetri earlier in 1984.

Eight years later, his parents launched him as a hero in Naalaiya Theerpu (1992).

A family film in every sense: directed by his father, written by his mother, with the future Chief Minister on screen at ten.

04 · Story

The Story

“A family torn apart, and two children who bring it back together.”

Vijay (Vijayakanth) falls in love with Devi, and with the help of Shankar and Vijaya the two marry. Devi dies soon after giving birth to their daughter, and a quarrel splits the household.

Vijay raises his daughter with his sister's help, while Vijaya's son Raja runs away with him. The two children end up on the streets, where Latha protects them from gangs trying to kidnap them. In the end, the family is reunited.
