Early life and musical training

Shoba developed an interest in music early and began performing with light-music troupes before entering films. She trained formally at the Tamil Nadu Government Music College, and her background spans Carnatic music and the veena as well as light music and film singing.

Playback singing

One of her earliest film songs was “Maharaja Oru Maharani” from Iru Malargal (1967), and she went on to sing in around a dozen films, including “Pagalil Oru Thagam” in Sattam Oru Iruttarai (1981) and “Pottikadai” with Ilaiyaraaja in Neethiyin Marupakkam (1985). Her musical interests extend to devotional and classical music.

Television

In 2003 she presented Samarpanam, a light-classical music programme on Vijay TV.

Writer and story contributor

Many of her stories were adapted into films, several of them directed by her husband S.A. Chandrasekhar. Published accounts credit her with stories for more than 50 films, including Sattam Oru Iruttarai, Kudumbam, Sendhoorapandi, Deva and Maanbumigu Maanavan.

Producer and director

As a producer she has backed around ten films, with credits listed for titles including Neethiyin Marupakkam, Sattam Oru Vilaiyattu, Naalaiya Theerpu and Pandhayam. She directed Nanbargal and Innisai Mazhai, with S.A. Chandrasekhar as her associate director — an unusual turn in their professional partnership.

Marriage and family

She married S.A. Chandrasekhar on 24 April 1973. The couple had two children, Vijay and Vidhya; their daughter Vidhya passed away at the age of two. Her brother S.N. Surendar is a playback singer and voice artist.

Public life

In 2011 she was appointed Artistic Heritage Consultant by the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Legacy

Though widely known as Vijay’s mother, Shoba Chandrasekhar has built an independent career across music, writing, filmmaking and television — a significant part of the history of the Chandrasekhar film family.
