Early life

S.A. Chandrasekhar was born in Thangachimadam, Tamil Nadu. He developed an interest in cinema early and gradually entered the film industry, and those early experiences shaped his later work as a director and writer.

Directorial career

He made his directorial debut with Aval Oru Pachai Kuzhanthai in 1978. His breakthrough came with Sattam Oru Iruttarai (1981), a socially themed action drama written from a story by his wife Shoba, which was remade in several Indian languages.

Over the decades he directed films on social issues, justice, family relationships and the struggles of ordinary people — among them Vetri, Naan Sigappu Manithan, Sattam Oru Vilayattu, Senthoorapandi, Rasigan, Deva, Vishnu, Nenjinile, Touring Talkies and Capmaari. He also directed films in Telugu, Kannada and Hindi.

Association with Vijay

Vijay appeared as a child artist in some of his father’s films before his debut as a lead actor in Naalaiya Theerpu (1992), directed by Chandrasekhar. He went on to direct Vijay in Senthoorapandi, Rasigan, Deva, Vishnu, Maanbumigu Maanavan, Once More, Nenjinile and Sukran. This partnership was central to the early phase of Vijay’s career.

Writer, producer and actor

Beyond directing, he has worked as a writer, screenwriter and producer, and has acted in films including Naan Sigappu Manithan, Deva, Kodi, Traffic Ramasamy, Aarudhra, Maanaadu and Tamilkkudimagan.

Family

He is married to singer and filmmaker Shoba Chandrasekhar. They have two children, Vijay and Vidhya; their daughter Vidhya passed away at the age of two. Actor Vikranth is his nephew.

Legacy

With a career spanning more than four decades, S.A. Chandrasekhar has been an influential figure in Tamil commercial cinema. His socially driven films, his long directorial career and his role in shaping Vijay’s early career are the pillars of his legacy.
